Explaining the EU deal

The Prime Minister’s EU renegotiation deal, or “new settlement for the United Kingdom”, is a package of changes to EU rules being discussed by European leaders on 18 and 19 February.

There’s been a great deal of speculation about whether the changes are significant and, separately, whether the deal itself will stick.

As these are first and foremost legal questions, we’ve asked a network of top EU legal experts, co-ordinated by Professor Catherine Barnard of Cambridge and Professor Eleanor Spaventa of Durham, to answer them.

Beginning on 17 February, we'll be publishing a series of pieces by these experts on what the EU deal changes.

Some individual changes will be important to many—particularly when it comes to benefits and the free movement of people.
