The riots
The aftermath of the August 2011 riots
On August 6-9 2011, parts of England were ravaged by mass riots, termed ‘public disorder’ by the Ministry of Justice. The sheer number of crimes committed means that the MoJ published a separate data series in the aftermath of the riots.
The statistics on public disorder include: the number of people brought before the courts, the offences they stood trial for, the average sentence length by offence, the criminal histories of suspects, and comparisons between sentencing for the riots and sentencing during 2010.
The data is broken down by: age, sex, ethnicity of suspect, the local area in which they were tried, and final sentence.
