There’s no evidence India has been removed from the “BRICS core committee”, despite claims circulating on social media.
Posts on Facebook, Threads and X (formerly Twitter) include a picture of Russian President Vladimir Putin shaking hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping, alongside the caption: “#BREAKING: Just in, India has been removed from the BRICS core committee.”
BRICS is a bloc consisting of nine countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
It’s not clear what the “core committee” referenced in the posts is—we’ve found no reference to a “core committee” within the BRICS group (though it’s possible it may refer to the original group of countries for which the bloc is named).
Regardless, there have been no announcements from the official BRICS 2024 summit website concerning India’s removal from a “core committee” or the group as a whole, and no credible media reports that any such decision has been made.
India attended the most recent BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, between 22 and 24 October, with numerous news articles written about its involvement.
In addition, the image in the posts was not taken at the recent summit, but instead dates back to the 2017 BRICS summit in Xiamen, China.

‘The BRICs’, standing for Brazil, Russia, India and China, was first coined as a term in a 2001 report published by the investment banking company Goldman Sachs.
It later developed into an intergovernmental organisation created by those four countries, which held the first formal BRIC summit in 2009.
In 2010 it was expanded to include South Africa, becoming known as the BRICS. It further expanded in January 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
The Council on Foreign Relations says BRICS countries “seek to build an alternative to what they see as the dominance of the Western viewpoint in major multilateral groupings, such as the World Bank, the Group of Seven (G7), and the UN Security Council.”
